Put A Fork In It

I'll admit to being more than a little bitter about missing Fleet Foxes AND Bon Iver (Originally a Jonk find) at Pitchfork this year due to a work event. That said, this video of "For Emma, Forever Ago" shot in Paris is making me feel a small bit better. I really need to find a way to get to one of Bon Iver's shows when AA Bondy's opening! Top Two? Milwaukee on August 14th or Troubadour on August 26th. Sincere logistical difference between the two but you know how I roll...

In other music news, Dave McMillin put on a sillyfab set last night at Schubas. Brother's voice gets that amazing soulgravel to it and it's simultaneously energizing and completely heartbreaking. The new album sounds fantastic (Heartsteady, Go Easy) but an unexpected highlight was his duet with Grant-Lee Phillips for "The Weight" by the Band.

Sooo nice to have some musical friends in the neighborhood now! There have been empty threats floating around about pulling yours truly on-stage to play some mad hot tambourine. You should know I play tambourine about as well as I play mandolin even though it looks less complicated.

"It's kind've like Friday...it's summer!!" says Lexi on the way into Schubas.

Alright, I'm settling down early tonight. Lex, Jeffe and I got a little whiskeytangoed last night in our summer concert enthusiasm. As in I left J a 5 minute message that was straight out of Greenville, MS. Yikes.

Maybe if I put on my fancy shoes and click my heels three times I can get to Dan Wilson's show in time to see the boys go on. Really just the one boy would do...two weeks!!

TKTC! Greenville, MS? I've been reading you now for a few months, basically lurking and drooling over your vacations and cooking skills! And your music reviews, as I basically do the same thing to my friends, only in emails! Are you from Greenville? I was born in Natchez, but am now in Philadelphia doing the big city thing for the best years of my life! Hey, and thanks for making my work days go by a little faster!

So Amanda, what you’re telling me is that we’re doing the same thing. Small town south was a great, albeit occasionally frustrating, way to grow up but the big city is where it’s at for the roaring twenties (and foreseeable future). I actually grew up in Germantown, TN just over the Mississippi border. For some reason my Southern accent takes after the girlfriends I had the summer I turned 21 and was going out in Oxford every other weekend! My mother looooves Natchez. She and her bridge buddies go down to do the house tours and eat fried green tomatoes every summer.

I love meeting southern people outside the south!! And I’m so glad you said hi!!! Who are you listening to at the moment? And btw, I am a little envious of your Philly lifestyle. Non-stop flights to Paris that seem perennially on sale, proximity to World CafĂ© and Ralph’s Italian. Yum!!!

I think I may have to take the trip over to Minneapolis in a month to see the Bon Iver/AA Bondy show. I'm going to see Justin Vernon in concert tomorrow night in Eau Claire, albeit not as Bon Iver. His little blues side project The Shouting Matches is playing. Two dollar cover charge = awesome. Of course, I think they only have about five songs. (Also, I have yet to visit an Eau Claire bar since a smoking ban began earlier this month, so that will be nice. For me, anyway.)

I'm quite sad that I will be missing Fleet Foxes at the Terrace next week. However, I actually plan to move back to Madison within the next couple months (!) so lately I get through the days knowing that soon I won't be missing such fun dates. Unfortunately, I will likely be jobless upon the move, so the concert budget might be conservative in the early goings. Fleet Foxes is free, though. How sick is that?

Bon Iver and AA Bondy in Minneapolis on Aug 15th ... we could potentially swing that!! Seriously I'd go back up there for a day, night, and concert! Housing would be totally taken care of ... think about it :) Guess this depends where the hell I am at that point ...

So you can't make it to Madison for the Fleeting Foxes? I'll probably venture to see them... if you and Jonk say they are good, that's enough for me!

If you do ever get around to coming to Madison... let me know!

And you get to see a Dan Wilson show... I'm jealous. :-)
