Like rap- I'm not listening to a whole lot of Akon (took me a pause just to have an example) but I really like Black Star, Common and, most recently, the ironically named Little Brother thanks to my own. Not exactly Hotel Cafe, but it adds a little interest to my iTunes. You should still check the Hotel Cafe Tour list and get your tickets. Good music, good company and all that fun.
That said, Brother had a new rec today so instead of paraphrasing, I figured I would lay it down straight up from sibling. I did not ask permission but find nothing offensive so, Brother, you're now guest-editing. Congratulations:
I have a new favorite band - Vampire Weekend.
It should suffice to tell you that one of the best songs on the album (self-titled) is called Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa, but I'll continue. To me, this is what it would sound like if Paul Simon scored a Wes Anderson movie.
My buddy Danny made the point that the CD came out too early, that it'd be much better as a summer album. I agree, but I'd say we deserve a little respite from the cold.
Sidenote: I'm a latecomer, evidently. They're playing at the MFA in Boston on Saturday night, and it's completely sold out. Tickets on eBay and Stubhub are going for around 200/pair. Yuck. It's hard to compete for indie acts like this when you've got Cambridge to the north and the Berklee School of Music right next door. Hipster fucks.
And there you have it...one of my favorite kinds of emails, verbatim. And by the by, take a little listen to Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa on MySpace and tell me that description wasn't DEAD ON. I'm even a little miffed because I just figured out that they'll be at the Metro on April 6th. Same night the Blitzen boys will be at Schuba's (and in all probability, spread out on my living room floor). Maybe there's a joint after-party to be organized. Not at my house- I'd be evicted!
The Also Rans: Other newbies in the iPod mix are Jukebox from Cat Power, Yael Naïm, Basia Bulat (via Jonk AND Emusic- ha) and I watch this video because it gives me chills and I'm still looking for the MP3.

I spend one week every year (during the summer, of course) on Cape Cod. So, any group naming a song after that little slice of heaven has to be good!
I like to google the music off of commercials, with that being said, I downloaded yael naim earlier this week - I am a fan indeed. Also - wish you weren't going out of town this weekend because Miami's own Kate Voegele is playing at Schubas on Sunday night. I don't know what you think about her (I mean she is a THETA, haha kidding!)but I am guilty of listening to her too!
Funny you mention Vampire Weekend. I just heard them this week for the first time as well. They're on the Bonaroo and Coachella line-ups.
I love discovering new music. I've found lots of good stuff through Jonk, whom I found through you. Thanks! :-) (And, I think he lives super close to me....or at least went to school near me. I think?)
Vampire Weekend has been in my blog queue for awhile now. I should probably get on that.....
Bwah, your brother is pretty funny. "Hipster fucks" indeed.
Nilsa: Me too!! Lately it's more like 2 long weekends if I can swing it but my parents pretty much live up there during the summer. I can very easily see myself with the sunroof open, blaring Vampire Weekend on the way to Nauset.
Joner: Kate is both a friend of Cole's and a friend of Jason's (worlds collide!) and I've traded facebook messages with her before Rites of Spring at Vandy. I will support in spite of her Theta-ness. I also google commericial music.
D$: I always hear Bonaroo and think, “God, what an experience. I should go!” and then I remember that it’s thousands and thousands of real life hippies. Not even the “hipster fucks” and certainly no plain janes like me. The only time I’ve slept in a tent was at the camping grounds next to King’s Island. I really wish I could go to the Metro show!
G: Jonk is in your neck of the woods I think ….for now anyways! And he is pretty great with the music, I stumbled on there during NaBloPoMo (how long ago does THAT feel??) and remember thinking, “Wow. I like ALL of it.”
Jonk: Were your ears burning? Probably not…you got a lot more snow than we did so it would probably take early onset frostbite to make them burn at this point. In any case, Vampire Weekend should definitely make the list and thanks for Basia!!
Ex: Yeah, he is the original person who gets me laughing so hard that I can’t stop. Or milk comes out my nose (sick but true). We may even be able to talk him into contributing on purpose sometime!
Little Brother here. While the cook did remain faithful to my original email, I just wanted to add some more song recs. If you're too cheap (holla!) to download them on iTunes, go to www.seeqpod.com and stream them...
M79 - my favorite, the most Life-Aquaticky of the bunch
Oxford Comma - straight up funny
(Learn something new everyday - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford_comma)
So funny. My friend who works at Newbury Comics just asked me if I knew Vampire Weekend because they were selling like crazyyy.
emusic is my home away from home...now I'm gonna have to check out Jonk :)
If you like Yael, definitely check out Sia. She is my newest obsession!
Brother: Right on. I now own the album and i'm not afraid of repeat.
Susie: hahaha, i emailed you the same minute you posted. It's the Secret!!!
As for Jonk, oh my yes. He makes my life much easier because I don't make enough time to look for good stuff on my own. And now i get lazier cause I have something new from him every day! Per Sia- I am a Zero 7 person who is just getting beyond "Breathe Me" and into her other stuff..any recs?
oooooooo i love the hotel cafe tour! i went and saw them at park west last spring was it? ahhhh it was incredible. i also may have a minor crush on josh radin...
are you planning on going march 28th? i need a date :)
Ang- Hilarious. I was at that show. And, yes, Josh is a very talented boy but it's his guitarist that usually has me the most unfortunate kind of butterflies. I did some pre-show press for Josh in summer 06 and have loved that whole group since then. Quite the charmers;)
