Rarrrr

I haven't had a haircut or color since February 9th. In the land of living on a tight budget, I can justify this. In the land of working on the professional side of beauty PR...not so much. We had a campfire last night so when I pulled my hair out of its pony this morning, not only did it smell like burnt marshmallows but it was HUGE. You can't even see the top of it here but I'm tired and I think you get the idea.

I don't need a lot. I'm liking it long at the moment but a trim and something to fix the inch and a half of roots would be good. The necessities are a creative accountant and potentially a circus groomer.

CHICago is My Kind of Town

I got my swank on for a bit tonight. The Boss likes for Colleague and I to attend networking events here and there and tonight was "Fashion Group's" Fall Trend Forecast. Translation: All those in Chicago qualifying for a subscription to Women's Wear Daily drinking pink grapefruit champagne cocktails and watching a GIGANTIC slideshow of fashion week highlights at the James Hotel. Colleague and I were exchanging notes through most of it on different outfits etc and then we had a chance to do the mingle.

Now y'all know I work in the salon side of Beauty PR. Well I walked up to a table and one of the Chicago Beauty beacons I work with as a client goes "TKTC, your hair looks fabulous, who are you going to?!" And I'm all, "Really? Thanks, I'm overdue to see Wes at the Ruby Room."

At which point a second man at the table starts positively beaming. He owns the Ruby Room. Small world. So we talk about the neighborhood (down the street from me) and I'm drilling him about this fabulous little dynasty he and his wife have built. It was lovely. And reminded me that I really need to try to book Wes before I leave for the UK next week
(TKTC Note: Damn I sound like a jetsetter in this post! Reality check: hanging out with a pink buzz in my sweatpants. Oh yes, jetSET.)

Moving on, that reminded me of my Daily Candy from yesterday and a Chicagoist entry today calling out a healthy fro yo place opening .... under the Ruby Room. Not only that but FREE tonight. So I decided to make a neighborhood night of it.

I got home from my swank little faaahhhshion dahling preview, got out of my wrapdress and into a zippy then called in some sushi. Did I mention it's suddenly beautiful out?

Starfruit is quite literally 4 minutes away. And all of the fro yo is made with kefir...my new favorite thing (Probiotic, Greek-style yogurt milk...obviously I love it) and after finding it at Stanley's I've been eating it for a week with a little honey and strawberries for Bfast. Yum.

But for ice cream...I had the original with Butterfinger to counteract anything TOO healthy. And on my way out to pick up my real dinner, I even bumped into an old sorority sister (don't laugh, I loved ever minute of it).

So here we are back at the ranch. Swirled, Sushi-ed, Swanked, Sweatpanting and ready for some Leno!

Also- almost totally unrelated- one of my other TV crushes (the one that reminds me of Jamieson) is now the voice of Applebees? Really, Aiden?

I've Survived. And I Have Swag.

What? Didn't I tell you I was going to open a salon out of my house? No? I have more product than I know what to do with so tonight is a fun one. And by fun I mean I am going to go pick up some sushi, stare blankly at my off TV for minutes at a time, shower, spend upwards of 15 minutes in hot water deciding which of these products to use and then go to bed early. Clean, soft and happy that I have a comp day tomorrow.
Also, I will be doing a giveaway. I have a full American Crew collection for men, a full TIGI collection men, a full TIGI collection for women and a full Joico collection for anyone. Plus some hilarious odds'n'ends. Like Stamp-On eyebrows. I'm going to take the night to think of how I can do this in a way that will be fun and fair for all involved. Normally I would have thought of something by now but my brain is operating at half-mast.
I'm done. And it's Glorious:)Reviews will be trickling in...

Highlight Reel

The Super Bowl is upon us yet again and I'm going to give the requisite Go Pats! and then get on with it. My whole family fancies themselves displaced Bostonites (except Brother, who really lives there) so that's the team I'm going with this year. Even though I'd forgotten the game was this Sunday until probably Thursday. What? Honey's so excited about the big game that she has not budged but to have her tum rubbed for the last 3 hours. Knowing that means I've not gotten too far either I guess.Even with the snow, we in Wicked Park had a fine weekend. Friday night I found myself enjoying a spot at the fireplace at Uncommon Ground, New Yorker in one hand (my first issue arrived this week- let the pseudo-intellectualism begin!)and a new favorite -Unibroue Ephemere- in the other while waiting for CVDJ, Bob and the Murray twins to arrive. Thirty minutes of uninterrupted workweek detox and one of my favorite spots in the city (and a bit of an anomaly for Wrigleyville). I was still thrilled to see everyone when they arrived but I'm glad to have had some quiet time after such a long week.

If you make it to Uncommon Ground, I'm gonna recommend the sweet potato fries, the calamari, the meatloaf, the tilapia...oh fine, all of it. They make a real effort with a creative, seasonal and mostly local menu and it shows. Live music as well which it has been established I am a sucker for. They host an annual Jeff Buckley Tribute that sells out in minutes. After a round at Pint (still holding strong as the tall boy holdout of Chicago...pun intended), I was asleep on the early.

Saturday had an early workout with Chester then P snagged me for lunch at Hot Chocolate (BLT with a shot of seasonal soup). Additionally, Mexican Hot Chocolate on a snow day -->big big fan. We then did a SALE circuit on Damen with Clothes Minded (Acrobat cardigan on sale from $110 to $33!), Tangerine, Riley, Gem and the new Marc by Marc Jacobs store. Marc was a a disappointment to be honest. A lot of crappy plastic stuff all over the place and just covered in logos. I did find a black patent wristlet for $13 but otherwise, just go to H&M. Seriously.

Haircut!
Off to get my hair did for the first time since the amazing Danny LaPointe did it in OCTOBER! Now I like long hair but this was just getting scraggly and as I am in the business, it's on the inexcusable side to let it go this long. Wes sat me down when I got to Ruby Room (LOVE this place) and had this look of relief on his face that tells me I had gotten there in the nick of time. On the verge of trading my trademark "crazy hair" for simply unkempt. I really liked the cut Danny had done because I could pin up the bottom layer and rock a faux bob and Wes was inclined to keep this but freshen up my highlights and "get a stronger line on the tips." I love hairdressers. This was just what I needed to get me re-engergized for the writing and press lists to be done- the show is only 3.5 weeks away!!!I got straight into my red dress after the salon and slipped/skipped right out the door to Japonais to meet Mar for the KPMG happy hour. I think there might have been dinner before I arrived but the majority of the team had cocktails instead.

Mar has been talking one of her managers up to me here and there for a little bit now and my curiosity was piqued. "He's smart, tall, early thirties, lives in the West Loop, hangs out at High Dive, you like the same kind of music..." I asked what he was like and she said, "Funny but a little mysterious." Mar could really have been in politics for the way I played into THAT hand. She knows me too well.

I did meet him and ended up chatting with him for most of the night, into Martini Park etc and gave him my number when he asked for it. Seems like a solid guy. His real name should be a little too easy to remember but he doesn't get a nickname or any further discussion unless he calls.

Currently I'm making the rest of the meatballs from Wednesday to take to Dave & Lisa's Pre-Game then off to Mag-a-roo's for dinner and a little surprise for dessert:) I haven't made old school banana pudding since the Sugar Shack. At Miami, all off-campus houses were named. That's probably a whole different post but I lived in the Sugar Shack with 6 other girls junior and senior year. You've already seen a few classics from those days (The Salad being the most frequent) but I'll be sharing some others soon. Without further ado...

Sugar Shack Banana Pudding

  • 1 (8 ounce) package lowfat cream cheese, softened
  • 1 (8 ounce) container lite sour cream
  • 1 (8 ounce) container lite frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 (1 ounce) packages instant sugar-free vanilla pudding mix
  • 5 cups nonfat milk
  • 1 (11 ounce) package low fat vanilla wafers
  • 7 bananas, sliced

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a medium bowl, beat cream cheese with sour cream. Stir in whipped topping and vanilla. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, combine pudding mix, sweetener and milk. Stir until sugar and mix are dissolved. Combine with cheese mixture.
  3. In a large glass serving dish, layer pudding mixture, wafers and bananas until all ingredients are used. Chill until serving. And give it some time, I personally like it better once the wafers have begun to soak up some of the pudding goodness.

That Thing You 'Do

I have had my MacBook for 6 months and never opened the PhotoBooth application until tonight. I clearly took it a little far but how fun is that?! I love my new haircut and color and am sending crazy hot karma to Danny LaPointe and Anita Guitierrez at Clairol Pro. You can't just go home to an empty house after gettin your hair did. I pulled the musical lasagna out of the fridge and Marianne & Cam came over for good size helpings with copious amounts of Menage a Trois.

Curly Q&A

NaturallyCurly.com is one of my favorite sites. Not only because Michelle is a blast to work with but because as a curly, it is just a genuinely kick-ass resource. Even the New York Times thinks so.

A month or two back we were catching up on an interview she was working on with a client of mine and we got to chatting about the dating scene somehow. This is when she told me that one of her contributors in NYC was working on a story to determine whether men really preferred straight or curly hair. Now this is something that I guarantee women of straight, curly and in-between persuasions has wondered at some point. Having embraced all hairstyles and colors at some point (mostly just "big"), I was seriously intrigued. Check it out here.

Now while we are on the topic of curls, I have product reviews. After a similar conversation with Michelle a few weeks ago (different project), she said she had a "cocktail" she wanted me to try. As I am a product-friendly house I agreed to review them and send her the feedback.
The first thing I loved was Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner which smells kind of like the beach and leaves my hair very soft. Plus, I think it may help my street cred to have something alluding to me as a "Mixed Chick" in my shower. Jewish-Catholic counts, right?
The next was AG Re:Coil which is a styling creme- left me a little stiffer that I typically like but I get the appeal. For those of you with thicker hair who are currently addicted to gel- this would be an EXCELLENT way to transition to a softer feel that still has a secure hold. And last but not least was CurlKeeper. I was wary of CK. Admittedly, I was being a snob. The packaging isn't nearly as cute as B&B's and I didn't quite "get it." It's a clear, silicone-based liquid that comes in a very low maintenance bottle. I was to put a good amount in my hair when it was still very wet to start to the curl process off.
I have to tell you, I have now used it for the last 2 weeks and am an addict. It does not change the texture of the curl beyond defining them and perhaps adding a little shine in what would have otherwise fallen in to a frizzy abyss. I don't care that it looks a little jank(sp?) in my cabinet, it's currently rocking my world and I knew that few of you would want/need to know about it.
